Job Overview

The Engineering Design Services (EDS) Lead manages a multidisciplinary engineering team that provides services to Joby and third-party clients, helping to define the group’s portfolio which includes drafting, tool design, and manufacturing support.The EDS Lead will strive to ensure excellence in engineering practices and support the rapid growth of the team and projects. This role requires close coordination between teams at Avionyx and Joby ensuring seamless integration and collaboration. In particular, the EDS Lead is responsible for the area projects and delivers results on time and within budget, demonstrating strong project management and leadership skills along with soft skills that foster a productive and innovative work environment.  The EDS Lead must demonstrate deep understanding of engineering standards and meticulous attention to detail which is crucial for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead the strategic vision for the engineering group in alignment with overall company goals, particularly focusing on business development initiatives.
  • Collaborate with executive management to formulate and execute strategic plans that drive growth and innovation within the engineering function.
  • Manage a multidisciplinary team of mechanical engineers, drafters, tool designers and specialists, ensuring high performance, collaboration, and project success.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and support to foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and technical excellence.
  • Oversee and support manufacturing activities to ensure accuracy, compliance with industry standards, and alignment with customer requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to engineering standards, best practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate and prioritize engineering projects to ensure efficient and timely completion.
  • Interface with Joby teams to align engineering efforts with overall business objectives and project timelines.
  • Monitor project progress, address issues promptly, and ensure deliverables meet quality standards.
  • Develop strategies to facilitate a rapidly growing engineering team, including recruitment, training, and professional development initiatives.
  • Cultivate relationships with external partners, vendors, and stakeholders to enhance team capabilities and technological advancements.
  • Facilitate seamless collaboration and project execution between internal teams (Avionyx and Joby) to align engineering activities and achieve shared goals.
  • Assist in developing and implementing new procedures or protocols as needed.
  • Support other team members as needed and contribute to relevant meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to engineering operations and special projects as assigned.

 

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Minimum experience of ~5 years in management (in a similar position)
  • A deep understanding of engineering and manufacturing practices.
  • Familiar with, and ideally proficient in the use of computer aided design tools (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks, schematic capture tools).
  • Able to identify, assess, and manage risks.
  • Knowledge of basic office applications (MS Office).
  • Experienced Project Manager.
  • Ability to apply Project Management techniques.
  • Experience using PM Tools.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9000 or Quality Systems
  • C1 English Proficiency
